Gayle Brandow Samuels, a lifelong lover of trees, is the author of Enduring Roots: Encounters with Trees, History, and the American Landscape (Rutgers University Press) and the creator of a body of cyanatopes, each examining an element of the natural world, from clouds to a variety of plants. Before returning to her Philadelphia Roots, she headed an award-winning statewide New Jersey project to uncover and publicize the history of New Jersey women. Past and Promise: Lives of New Jersey Women grew out of that effort (The Scarecrow Press).
